Jun 29th 2009 J. Morgan Puett “artistic domesticating” at it’s finest

J. Morgan Puett Portrait
I first learned of J. Morgan Puett as a student at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is an alumni of SAIC and while I did not attend The School at the same time as her, she has long been someone whose body of work I hold high up on a pedestal.

J. Morgan Puett’s work spans from architecture and interiors to fashion and art installations. I believe from the center of my core that it is truly incredible work. Just looking at these images while putting this post together makes my heart sing. She lives day in and day out within her artistic expression exploring her involvements with food, shopping, making, styling, gaming, sleeping, reading, and thinking.

Food as Art

J. Morgan Puett is an artist and fashion designer that I have held close to my heart when it comes to being an influence on my personal style. If there was ever perfection in the in-perfection, her body of work is one of the best examples (and most consistent!) I have seen.
J. Morgan Puett Dresses

During my late teens and early to mid 20’s I wore (almost exclusively) dresses by J. Morgan Puett. The fact that I still wear these amazing pieces 10+ years later is a true testament to the honest construction, beautiful fabrics and timeless designs that she created.

Cottage Industry

From 1993-1997 she ran “J. Morgan Puett, Inc.,” a project that took the form of a small business in New York City. From 1998-2001 she collaborated on a New York-based experimental, retail-clothing manufacturing project. The designs she made were based both on Early American textiles and contemporary styling. The garments referred to the early age of photography, from turn-of-century erotica to the Depression era.

Long before I moved to New York I would travel to the City and make pilgrimages to her amazing art-installation “shops.” She had 4 or 5 stores (at different times) which were scattered from Soho through Tribeca and the last I recall was on Broadway closer to the Financial District than the heart of Tribeca.
J. Morgan Puett "Shops"
Each and every shop was a collection of her interior design, objects and her statement of the moment. The clothes were for sale in the gallery style space but it was more than just a shopping trip – it was an experience. One shop had leather floors (amazing) another shop had red Georgia dirt covering the floor. I remember an installation where the reproductive parts of a queen bee were embroidered onto sheer silk organza fabric. It was draped on the windows, but also was used in some of the key pieces of her fashion line for the season.
J. Morgan Puett - Collectors Items
She has made her art the epitome of her life experience and while at some points you might find it a bit extreme … her practice is completely inspirational to me. Want to know more? Last Spring, the New York Times wrote an article featuring J. Morgan Puett’s home and current project called Mildred’s Lane, which is an “ongoing experiment in art, design and aestheticized living.” Also be sure to check out the NYT slideshow associated with the article. This article about J. Morgan Puett by Lucie Young is also a good read.

Mildred's Lane

Take some time to explore the J. Morgan Puett website and more importantly, read about her exploration in “artistic domesticating and collaboration” at the Mildred’s Lane artists’ colony. I’d love to be a fly on the wall at one of those dinners. Maybe I’d even convince her to do a limited run of her favorite fashion designs. *winkwink* I’d sign up for at least three of each piece. I’d wear them everyday long into when I become old and grey… and beyond!

Jun 28th 2009 Mad at Madoff? Say it on your shirt!

The man responsible for turning our “perfect little world” on it’s ear is being sentenced this week. Are you mad at Madoff? Say it on your shirt! Muck Fadoff t-shirt’s are available at Cafe Press. There are several different styles – check them out here.
Mad at Madoff? Say it on your shirt!
I wore my “Subtle T” (charcoal grey on black) all day Saturday. The cheers and inquiries came rolling in. I have a feeling I sold a few! It would be completely ironic if Mr. D and I made money off of these T-shirts, wouldn’t it?

Jun 26th 2009 ABC Dragoo {Featured} Creatives Cook

How often to I sing the praises of Twitter? Yet again, I have to say it is a wonderful place! As part of my Nesting “Twibe” I like to Tweet and RT (re-tweet) items of interest that I think my Nesting Group would like. The key topics in this group are Nesting, Design, Home and Recipes. One morning last week I was “Tweeting” back and forth with interior designer Tobi Fairley (@tobifairley) about banana bread and spaghetti carbonara recipes – when lovely Ms. Shani aka (@camillemaurice) chimed in. She had decided to start a whole series of blog posts about creative professionals and their favorite recipes on her blog called Camille Maurice. What a pleasure and compliment to me ~as Camille Maurice asked ABCD to be interviewed for the VERY FIRST CREATIVES COOK POST!!

It’s just starting to get incredibly hot and humid in NYC. The moment the temp goes over 70 degrees, I start to wish for Fall in a really big way. I was interviewed for the Creatives Cook blog post as well as asked to share my *very* favorite recipe. I have so many favorites … but since I am longing for Fall, I decided to share my Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread Recipe.

Pop on over to read a little about me … (ABCD!) … and to start planning your first October Bakery session!

{Lemons to Lemonade Update} Mr. D has a very important 9am meeting today. Our hopes are that this meeting will lead to funding for a new company who is interested in hiring him. Mr. D was responsible for arranging this very important meeting … so my fingers are crossed if they get the funding they’ll remember who got them there! It is pretty exciting as the job would take us clear across the country to Los Angeles – can you imagine that? We’d be near Cordelia (our new niece) AND have a new place to decorate ~Yippee!

Jun 25th 2009 Dream Decorating {Wisteria}

When we lived in the heart of Soho, my evening walk to the market often included a stop at Ochre or into one of the other amazing interior design shops along the way. Since moving to the Financial District, I have been attempting to fill my daily dose of interior design desires online. Several items have caught my eye at Wisteria. Let’s start with this rustic two-drawer console table, shall we? It has a zinc top and I believe it would make itself quite useful in any room.

I am loving this industrial draftsman’s stool. This black iron look reminds me of weekends in Kent. Reason being, the Kent Iron Company was located in the Housatonic River region of Connecticut. That area was one of the country’s most important sources of iron in the 19th century. Black iron is used as home and interior accent accessories in almost every building for that reason! White painted cabinets with black iron handles =VERY= Kent, Connecticut!

Coopers Draftsman Stool

We had a tripod lamp in the bedroom of our last place. I loved how it threw light onto my favorite painting, St. Annie. A workman knocked it down during our air conditioning installation project last summer. WAH! This metal tri-pod lamp would replace our broken one quite nicely!

Antique Style Metal Tripod Lamp

I like this antique stone side table. I can see myself placing my morning coffee cup upon it. It’s sort of like a garden stool, only better.

I am a sucker for linen and burlap (fill in the blank here) -!-ANYTHING-!- This feed sack table runner (avail in red or blue!) reminds me of that love. P.S. Check out this site if you’re looking for the “real deal” in feed/flour sack vintage linens. I know I will when I am ready to reupholster the right piece or start my collection of vintage hand towels!

These scatter pillows would look fabulous this summer on an all white bed or sofa!

Scatter Pillows

This vintage washtub would look awfully good chalk full of colorful yarn!

If I had a place to dine outside … with a pergola overhead … can you imagine that?
Curled Wire Candle Chandelier
I think I would have to order two of these curled wire candle votive chandeliers to hang over a long farm table. Once they were hung and everything lit – delight! – only I would have to keep my fingers crossed that a breeze wouldn’t blow through.

From Swedish and French to Industrial and Contemporary – no doubt there is delightful home decor to be found at Wisteria.
