I am dying to get our stuff out of storage and start decorating our new space! When it comes to putting my at home workspace together - I am bursting with ideas. As you may recall, I hope to be starting with this desk from Blu Dot. I will place it in front of a wall of books behind glass. Ideally, I will find similar bookcases similar to the ones that are posted below. Instead, I hope to find them in weathered grey-colored wood. The hunt for bookshelves starts now. My fingers are crossed!
You may already understand my love for books and colorful objects under glass - but these images from Apartment Therapy say it all. Can you believe that the bookcases are Ikea? I love how everything is away and tidy behind the glass (staying dust free) but adds color to a neutral room AND allows you to see where everything is for ease of getting work done. Apartment Therapy calls this space her “craft studio” but after checking out Needle Book’s comments on the post, it appears this space does double-duty as a dining room.
When it comes to organizing the space, I have found a lot of inspiration on blogs and in images on Flickr. Keeping items you use a lot within close reach is very smart. I love the idea of repurposing vintage crystal such as candy dishes and high-ball glasses to hold little things. I did this with buttons and yarn in my last place. Not only did it look cute, but it was a great way to add color to the room.

The spaces below are all from Jubella.com and while they don’t necessarily reflect my personal taste or how I would design my studio space, they do remind me that everyday items can be implemented for non-traditional uses. In the first apartment I had in NYC, I used a coat closet as my office. It was pretty sweet. It was a great use of space and I would most certainly utilize this space saving trick again if need be.
Flickr has tons of photos of real work spaces. You may have fun browsing around these groups who have captured their at home workspaces in action. Who knows … it may just inspire you to get organized!

If we move off to the suburbs somewhere (because of Mr. D’s job search) – I delight in the fact that there may be a separate studio space on the property that is separate and away from the house. A room of my own~! Seriously, how totally wonderful would that be!?! I would fill the space with music … and go at it!

{Lemons to Lemonade – UPDATE}
It’s been two months since we moved into a furnished short-term rental. If you’re taking notes – our lease ran out on June 15th. Mr. D and I had really hoped that we’d have our plans nailed down by now. At this point we should have been getting our stuff back out of storage, moving into our new home together, unpacking and living life in the “new normal.” Of course, no such luck. This week we extended our month-to-month lease until the end of July. Mr. D has four job options that he is looking at (ONLY 1 is in NYC!) and the fall-back plan is to go to school for a Masters. Our fingers are crossed that something will shake out and we’ll know where we are moving by the end of July!

Amy, GOOD LUCK!!!! I know you two will find your way with style.
Speaking of, this post is completely inspiring. We’ve been eying a red dish cabinet that would hold some dishes but also all my colorful cookbooks, and this post makes me want to snap it up today!
Keep the eye candy coming!

I know it is so tough to have life up in the air and to not have things settled by the time you had intended. Here’s hoping that y’all have your answers by the end of July!! xo
