This is how I created a pantry (idea came from something I saw in a home show in Boston). I took a closet which was left over space from a stairwell and put in shelves. The top shelf is 4 feet deep, but the second from the top is just about 16 inches deep. Then there is a lower shelf about 16 inches deep with a space of about 36 inches from that to the upper shelf. On the lower shelf I placed empty coffee cans on their sides, with of course the opening facing front. I stacked them up staggered - honeycomb fashion. In these I keep such things as rice, dried beans, pasta, in their original packages or in plastic bags. Some of the cans are the large size, some the smaller size. From the front when you open the pantry door you see all of those circles with food in them - very pretty. I put in one of those lights that you touch and turn on. On that upper 16 inch deep shelf I keep some cereals, mixes, Panko, etc. On that deep top shelf I keep my picnic supplies, plastic food containers, and some holiday serving pieces.

In our anticipation of moving to CedarBerry Woods - where the nearest store is 35 miles away - the pantry is going to be so important in the design of our kitchen. I've always been a jar hoarder and now my obsession will be helpful. Love all the great photos. Something to think about when establishing a pantry - your stock keeps better when it isn't exposed to bright light.

Great post. I don't have a pantry (boohoo)- I do have 20 giant drawers, some of them filling the pantry's shoes, so to speak, but I can't wait for a dream kitchen one day, with endless countertop area and a deep, deep pantry.

love those pantries! your blog is beautiful, as well! we just got a pantry in our new kitchen, and i'm dying over how much space i have- it was SO fun to organize! and yes, lots of mac n cheese, although i try to make it from scratch when i can! much yummier.

thanks for the OO/EVOO tip- i'm adding regular OO to my grocery list! is it better than substituting veg or almond oil?
happy monday!
