Jul 31st 2009 M O V I N G

moving

After ten and a half years it is hard to leave the City. This has been a tough realization for me that we might not come back … Right now, I am packing up the last few things to get on the road. I wanted to pop in and say hello. Sorry the last few Friday’s my posts have been a little light on pretty things. Boo to that. Plenty of beautiful food and decor fun to come in the upcoming weeks though ~I promise! It’s our intention to stay in Michigan until my interior design project is well on it’s way. August and maybe a few weeks in September? Who knows, I suppose it has mostly to do with how everything unfolds on Mr. D’s side … Let the adventure begin!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Jul 30th 2009 Wedding Registry 101: Scanpans

In my opinion, Scanpans are the very best cookware on the market. The extra thick base on these pans makes for quick and even heating. The ceramic titanium nonstick surface allows for high-heat cooking. Completing kitchen tasks such as searing, browning and deglazing are a snap with a Scanpan – these processes ARE NOT normally associated with nonstick cookware!

Scan Pan

These pans offer fool-proof food release and super easy breezy clean-up. Scanpan’s nonstick cooking surface is impossible to scrape away, even with metal utensils. (These are NOT your Mama’s nonstick pans!) Not to mention, the nonstick surface allows you to use less fat/oil/butter during preparation = cleaner, healthier food!

Scanpan 10 piece set

There are two different lines of Scanpans. The Classic and the Professional are both oven safe up to 500 degrees. One thing that differentiates the Scanpan Classic 14 piece set from the Scanpan Professional 14-piece set is the handle of the pan. If you notice, the professional set has a hollow metal handle which makes them slightly lighter in weight than the Classic. The Classic set has a patented spring-lock handle stays cool during normal stovetop use. FYI: I have a few pieces of each set and do not prefer one over the other. You just need to remember that the professional handles tend to get quite warm on the stove top if they’re too close to the flame.

Scanpan Classic, Scanpan Professional

If you were going to start by buying ONE piece from this collection, I would suggest you purchase the Scanpan 10.5 inch Classic Fry Pan. The square shape creates a more space-efficient cooking surface, with the same sloping sides that make a traditional round pan perfect for flipping and turning foods. If you start frying weekend eggs in this pan, you’ll wonder all week long why you don’t have the whole set!

10.5in Fry Pan

P.S. Want to know more about them? I found an unbiased review by AnneK at Elizabeth Anne Designs Living. We’re both big fans, but she goes into the knitty gritty details (including explaining PFOA and PFOS – The biggest reason WHY Scanpans ARE NOT like your mother’s nonstick pans) here.

Jul 29th 2009 James Michael Howard {interiors} Traditional, not fussy.

With a new interior design project on my plate, I have been thinking about what I just might do with the space. You may remember that it’s bones look traditional in style – however, I do not foresee anything fussy. It will have to be utilitarian, furnished with tough fabrics that stand the test of time. It is a furnished rental unit afterall!

Interior designer James Michael Howard does traditional really, really well. He brings us these lovely neutral rooms…

Jul 28th 2009 ABCD’s Easy Strawberry Pie Recipe

Twitter is a pretty cool place because (dependent upon who you follow) you’ve got a stream of real-time “news” flowing across your screen with a push of a button. It is a stream of consciousness. It allows you to tap into what others are doing/thinking/reading/eating right this second. Over the last several days it seems every time I refresh my screen, someone is talking about fresh strawberries -or better yet- what to do with them in a recipe! To the point, I kept wondering if it will become a trending topic like Michael Jackson or Election in Iran -okay, maybe I am exaggerating and it’s not that extreme- perhaps it has to do with the fact that I follow people who I have a lot in common with. When they’re thinking strawberry pie … so am I!
Strawberries
I was going to hold off on sharing this recipe until I got to make it myself with beautiful and fresh “Michigan” strawberries … I just learned that my mom is throwing a pool party on Sunday … what could be better than a strawberry pie for dessert? Perhaps I will share pictures of my finished pie after the party -?- Which reminds me, I have spent a large amount of time the last few days reading the Nikon D70 Digital Field Guide. It is my FULL intention to start taking better photos for this blog o’mine.

Strawberry Pie Tweets

Nonetheless, I find myself longing to be one with the “twitterverse” so I will share the recipe today and join this wave of strawberry consciousness so here it is: ABCD’s Favorite (and EASY) Strawberry Pie Recipe

Jul 27th 2009 ABCD moving *AGAIN!*

Most of you know that we have been renting a furnished apartment on Wall Street for the last 90 days. Wall Street. It’s ironic, isn’t it? Guess what? Mr. D and I are moving – AGAIN! Unfortunately we are not going to wait out the recession in Italy as I had wished.

At the end of this week we are giving up our New York City address. We’re off to the Mid-West where we plan to spend the month of August. We plan to pack a small uhaul truck with the personal items that did not go to storage earlier this Spring. Everything else we own will stay here in storage while we wait for the next step to present itself. It doesn’t mean we won’t come back to NYC, but for now we might as well escape the dog days of summer in the sweltering City.

You all may be wondering “What’s happening with Bespoke?” Don’t worry. I have every intention of continuing on with Bespoke Stationery as usual. Remember, the flexibility of where I can practice stationery design is why I got into the business in the first place. Besides, only like 5% of my brides are actually from New York City. The rest of them find me on the glorious internet! It’s just that since we are no longer required to hop over the pond to London every other month with Mr. D’s work, I am free to take ABCD {interior} Design jobs as they come.
Lemons MAKE Lemonade
Which leads me to exciting ABCD {interior} Design news: I have been offered a job to design, furnish and decorate a two bedroom corporate condominium in suburban Detroit. Don’t ask me how the Big Three plans to rent corporate housing ~ not my problem! It is not the most glamorous of jobs ~ there is a major budget! I am however quite thrilled that the owners of this place realize this condo is in need of a serious paint job. Who paints a ceiling brownish-yellow? Not to mention it’s got to be the ugliest color of yellow, EVER! Sorry, but it makes me think about the contents of a baby diaper ~ it’s so gross!

Painted the color you see in baby diapers

Speaking of babies, I am pretty excited about being in Michigan for a whole month because most of my family is in the area. We will be able to spend a lot of quality time with them during our stay. I have a niece and two little nephews who have never gotten nearly enough face time with Auntie Amy and Uncle “Cott.” My sweet nephew Charles refuses to pronounce his S’s – which is pretty funny. Charles seems to think that his Uncle Cott “hung the moon” and is constantly attempting to get Cott’s undivided attention by addressing “Cott” by his first name. Talk about PRICELESS -!-

Auntie Amy and Uncle Cott

During our trip, we plan to visit my Mom and Dad in Northern Michigan. They have a house on the lake that (to me) is complete perfection. There is nothing quite like the entire day revolving around Lake Michigan. I love going to the white sand beach, having a picnic, swimming, grilling dinner on the deck and then watching the sunset over it. In Northern Michigan there are tons of antique shops (totally up my alley) and a place nearby called the Pond Hill Farm where you can pick up the freshest produce, pickled veggies, homemade preserves, fresh flowers -AND- you get to see the cutest little piglets ever – all in one stop!

The Pond Hill Farm

Along with an address change for the D’s – there should be lot’s of good “nesting” posts on ABCD Design. Considering we are making a temporary move and have yet to settle and nest in our new home … this seems like it could be forever before we land someplace for real! … I am going to make an effort to keep you up to breast of the decor decisions I make for the corporate condo on Walnut Street.
Changes on Walnut Street
You may see me adding to the “totally delicious dishes” category more frequently now that I will have a fabu country kitchen to work in. (This rental kitchen was a complete disaster!) Knowing I will have great Michigan produce close at hand makes me eager to do some cooking with my mom. It’s been eight long years since she wrote out her tried and true recipes and presented them to me in my very own “cookbook.” Needless to say, she has added to her extensive repertoire since then.

In other super exciting ABCD Design news: You may have seen a new button in the sidebar of ABCD Design today. It’s right under the All The Best interview button. Yep, it’s official. I have my first “gig” blogging outside of ABCD Design. Wha-hoo-eee! I am really, really happy to be a contributor to such a cool community and blogging amongst such a distinguished group of ladies.

EADL

You guessed it, I am now an official blogger at EAD Living. I could not be more delighted as my first “introduction” post ran this morning at 9am – please pop by and leave a comment! This next month should be fun, don’t you think?
