Blogs Become Books! {Weekend Reading}

I must have been under a rock when the Julie/Julia book first came out. I certainly did not know of the blog when Julie was working her way through Julia’s recipes. Heck, I don’t even think I knew that blogs existed! Perhaps when the book came out I wasn’t intrigued by the idea of blog to book writers? Whatever the case -I am on a roll now- having recently finished two different “food blog to book” stories. Back in July (before fever-pitch marketing started for the Julie/Julia movie) I stumbled upon a table at the bookstore dedicated to Julia Child and decided to give the Julie/Julia book a try. I can’t find very many remnants of the old blog – oh, how I wish it were still live! I can only find the blog that Julie Powell writes about life after the recipe blog became a book deal and in turn, a movie. Needless to say, I enjoyed the book. I have not yet seen the movie. I can’t decide whether or not the movie will make the book a disappointment, or vice versa. Thoughts? Did anyone see the movie that was inspired by the Julie/Julia book? The second book I finished this month was A Homemade Life. It is an incredibly sweet story.

Blogger Molly Wizenberg writes Orangette. She started the blog because she wanted to write about food. The story in A Homemade Life starts with memories of her father and follows her life through finding herself, starting the blog, falling in love (via the blog) and ends with a wedding! She seems much more in love with the experience of food than she is in love with cooking. This book was much more about the memories behind the dishes and I really enjoyed her writing style. If you’re reading blogs, are interested in food and have yet to read either of these books – I’d suggest to pick one up, go sit in a lawn chair, soak up some sun and get reading!
Tomorrow we are flying off to attend a wedding in Charleston, South Carolina. My fingers are crossed that the hurricane doesn’t put a kink in our plans. I guess bad weather threats are what we deserve for planning a 24 hour visit to the South for a wedding at the end of summer. I am sure we will be spending much of the trip in the airport waiting on delayed flights. Do any of you have other “foodie” books you’d recommend that I pick up for our adventure? Whatever you’re up to this weekend, I hope you have a good one. Fingers crossed, I will see you here on Monday, that is … if I am not still stuck in Charleston. winkwink

If you’re an Italian food fan — who isn’t?!? — you may enjoy I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti by Giulia Melucci (April 2009). NYC-based Melucci details several of her busted relationships, while providing a running commentary of her love affair for Italian food (her recipes are peppered throughout the book). Light-hearted, but entertaining. A good “foodie” book!
A few examples the recipes she provides:
- No Nookie Gnocchi
- First Date Butterflies
- Spaghetti and Meatballs for Cooking Sluts and Those Who Love Them
- Fuck-You Cakes
- Linguine With Friendly Little Fish

Have fun at the wedding!

The movie was adorable! You should definitely see it. Gosh, you’re going to LOVE Charleston. That’s where I went to College. You’ll definitely enjoy the food there.

Wasn’t A Homemade Life a wonderful read?! I’m about halfway through Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl (recommended by Maggie on twitter) and I’m loving it so far. I have a feeling all of her books are just as great as this one.
