Nov 30th 2009 08:19 am New apartment, New Bed {my ideas}
A footboard is absolutely out of the question when working with an ultra small space. All it does is make a little space seem smaller. Which means: when we move into our new studio apartment at the end of this week, we will not bring our nifty West Elm four poster canopy out of storage. (Sorry folks, West Elm stopped production so I can’t link to it. Check out this Architecture Bed by Room and Board instead!)
We’re going to need to conserve space in our new mini-sized place. While it makes perfect sense for our studio to get a queen sized bed, it doesn’t make sense for Mr. D’s 6’4 frame. Yep, we’re going to stick with a king sized bed. I know, it’s absurd- isn’t it? This is one time where we choose function over fashion. Mr. D tends to sleep in X formation and I will not be well rested if we have a queen sized bed.
If we go for a modern look, the Matera Bed from DWR could have my vote. It’s beautifully made, low, sleek and absolutely easy on the eyes. Not to mention, it gives us 6 drawers of folded storage. What could be better? The downside: it’s got a HUGE price tag. H-U-G-E. {But then again, if we don’t have to buy a dresser … winkwink!}
Speaking of huge price tags – if money were no object, you might find this Ligne Roset platform bed in our new place. I wouldn’t go with the matchy-matchy nightstands, but I love the punch of red and hot pink together. I especially adore it with those coal grey walls. Too bad you can’t actually paint a rental apartment grey, or can you? If the answer is no, I love this temporary color fix I found at Loving Living Small.
Given that Mr. D is still looking for work, we really shouldn’t be buying a bed at all. I may have Linge Roset taste, but we are currently on a CB2 budget! For the price, this Alpine bed may do the trick. I like that the headboard can double as a nightstand. That ledge would be a good spot for his iphone and my blackberry to sleep. {winkwink!}
This wooden bed is a fresh take on the tall, curvy upholstered headboards we’ve been seeing a lot of recently. I could easily lean towards the look that would be created by purchasing the Gustavian Vintage Bed from Viva Terra. It’s both modern and vintage, all at once.
The Francoise Bed from the Conran Shop seems to be the perfect fit. It’s the low profile-modern, Gustavian curvy, pop of red bed that I am looking for. Too bad it only comes in Queen size! I am gonna keep searching… we may be sleeping mattress-on-the-floor-style for some time to come!

Love the Gustavian. Seems like it’s a perfect blank canvas for an array of linens. Hubby and I are looking to buy so that we can finally have the bed of our dreams. Good luck with yours.

I liked to the Gustavian bed the other week, too! It’s just perfect, perfect, perfect – I literally open the catalog to stare at it all the time. Of course, we don’t even need a bed – we have West Elm basic tall wooden platform with a simple headboard. But still. STILL!

I like the Francoise, and I think it could be copied for a fraction of the price. I also love the curtain idea, because it could translate to a lot of different spaces in the future. I love small spaces, and I love to decorate them.

You never cease to enthrall me with your decorating finds. I love all of these beds. If I could afford it, I would most definitely spring for the DWR bed.

WOW!! So much love for the Gustavian bed! Wishing I could see it in person before we take the leap. You know it would really stink if it arrived and we didn’t like the quality, color or something, wouldn’t it?
Anne K, thanks for the decorating L O V E. xx
Lydia, owning in NYC isn’t all it is cracked up to be. The state charges an arm and a leg for the “pleasure” of home ownership (both coming in and going out) We could have bought a home in most states for the amount we spent in taxes both buying and selling our lovely Greene Street loft in Soho! GAG!! I say buy the dream bed “rental” or “not!”
Thanks for your comments today ladies.
