Country Kitchen {Notes for the Design File}

1. A row of glass display cabinets under a full wall of windows – brilliant. I like that they are slightly high. Perhaps they are 48 inch upper cabinets that have been installed on the floor?

2. I have said this before, but I love, love, L O V E when a range is slid into a space where it looks like a fireplace once stood. It reminds me of my F A V O R I T E reclaimed barnwood kitchen from a post I did last year. It’s definitely a design feature I’d like to work into a country kitchen. I just need to remember that there must be room on either side of the range for pot handles so that outer burners are not rendered unusable or awkward.

3. I like it when the kitchen center island looks as though it’s a antique French dining table. Hey, did you notice that the sink is in the island – and that it over looks the wall of windows? Nice touch. If I am going to hand wash dishes, I want to be able to enjoy the view. With the sink in the island, what do you do with entire wall behind you? A dishwasher and lots and lots of low cabinets. Smart idea – why you ask? Because you won’t ever need a footstool to get to your everyday pots and pans -or- your precious entertaining pieces. You’ll simply use the good stuff more often because it’s within reach. That goes right along with my “Life is short, eat off the good china!” motto, doesn’t it? Last but not least, I love the rustic chandelier. Easy-breezy maintenance. You won’t find me installing Hungarian Crystal in the maintenance-free country house. No, never.

P.S. Below, a refresher of my very favorite kitchen from last year. This lovely kitchen is somewhere in Southern California and was published in House Beautiful. It’s reclaimed barnwood, antique mirror and stone. Gorgeous.

    Your fave kitchen from last year … holy geez. That thing is perfection. Where do I get one?

    Re: the first photos … in addition to its obvious and beautiful “guts,” I am loving that floor, chandelier, and basket. Stunning.

    Ah, Beverly… it was custom made! I will see if I can’t find the source again and post it here in the comments. Since I wrote that first blog post, House Beautiful got rid of the url I originally linked to. All I can remember off the top of my mind is that it was in SoCal, maybe Los Angeles.

    I will see if I can find the cabinet maker again.
    xx

    I like the ideas you presented here. As for the lady who wants the name of the cabinetmaker who did these kitchens… I don’t know either. But what I would suggest, if that person cannot be found, is to take these pictures to anyone who does kitchens, especially an independent cabinetmaker. They may well be able to make this kitchen for you. Some parts of it are obviously a bit of a challenge, but if you keep at it, you should be able to line up someone who can do the work. Slick post, though. I’m glad I came across it!

    Reclaimed barn wood and stone not only looks fab, gives the room the feeling that it’s been there 4ever, and will be so easy to maintain. How brilliant is that??? Love this space!
