Feb 8th 2010 10:55 am Liljevalch sofa: Josef Frank, 1934
This Swedish sofa by Svenskt Tenn is so low that you can literally crawl-up and into it from the floor without any effort. The seat is so incredibly deep it might as well be a full size bed. The loose scatter pillows allow you to adjust them as necessary for maximum lounging comfort. The low slung arms have curves reminiscent of what you’d find in a Gustav Klimt painting. If I had one in my living room, I imagine one day I’d come home and find Jean Harlow sprawled out on it like a cat in the sun. Svenskt Tenn has been a lifestyle company since 1924. It was founded at a time when the design world was flush 1920’s high-fashion, worldly elegance and exoticism.

It’s amazing to me that it looks as current in 2010 as it did in 1934. That is great design! The Svenskt Tenn design philosophy speaks to my heart: “There’s nothing wrong with mixing old and new, with combining different furniture styles, colours and patterns. Anything that is in your taste will automatically fuse to form an entire relaxing environment. A home does not need to be planned down to the smallest detail or contrived; it should be an amalgamation of the things that its owner loves and feels at home with.”

I either dream of a sofa that is so deep that I get lost or one that is so low that I blend in with the earth. Why, I think this does the trick.
What a great time I’m having learning about Svenkst Tenn yesterday and his today. It’s fun to see how design translates.
