Mission: Comfort Food

As I am sure you’re well aware – I have posted many recipes and tutorial for roast beef and beef brisket in the past. Roasted or braised with vegetables, you can get a lot of bang for your buck by serving a brisket. The Beef Brisket recipe featured below struck a chord with me because I adore roasted prunes. They’re hot, sweet, intense and bursting with flavor ~ so delish! BTW: I have another dish that utilizes roasted prunes … do you remember my chicken marbella recipe?
If you ask me what my favorite thing to eat is – I’m pretty sure it would involve Sour Cherry American Spoon Fruit and a dollop of crème fraiche. These two ingredients would be smothered on some sort of eggy and slightly sweet, toasted breakfast bread. However, if I were selecting from savory dishes – I’d pick spaghetti carbonara, or medium-rare lamb chops. Needless to say, when I stumbled upon this lamb chop recipe, I was romanced by the idea of combining two of my favorite flavors – sour cherry and lamb! In my mind, I instantly substituted my Sour Cherry American Spoon Fruit where it asks for 3 Tablespoons of cherry jam. I might consider using a peppery red wine instead of port in this recipe… just thinking out-loud here.
I think that this Corn Pudding recipe would be wonderful served aside either the beef brisket or the lamb chops – I love the idea of mixing the simple flavors of milk, egg, pepper and onion with the robust and earthy, fruit-flavored main dishes.
I found these three recipes at Epicurioussimply click the image to be directed to the online recipe card.

Tell me, where are your favorite places to find new and inspiring recipes? Do you get them from friends, an online source, or do you have a collection of cookbooks that you scour for ideas?

Most of my recipe inspiration comes from family and online sources (epicurious, foodie blogs, food network {Ina and Paula}). In my opinion, there’s nothing better than a warm bowl of pasta. ;-)

    Cheers,

Mnnnnn, Camberley ~ I too love a warm bowl of pasta – but I rarely make it myself at home.
    I always eat pasta out…

I remember a nice carbonara recipe from Nigella Lawson’s comfort food book (which, of course, is in storage!) but once I get it back, I am totally going to attempt to make it at home!

I have taken a lot of inspiration from Ina’s cookery ~ I’ll have to check Paula out again. I can never get past how she talks with her mouth full on her show. It makes me want to gag. :P Perhaps I will peruse her recipes w/out having to watch videos of her and I’ll find something interesting?

    Thanks for chiming in!

I agree with the pasta! Although these days I eat a lot of brown rice pasta. Less guilt ;-) Trader Joe’s brand is actually pretty good.

To chime in on Ina’s recipes, I do have some of her books and her recipes are pretty good. I also get inspiration from food blogs more these days than the food-sites, it seems. But I still like Epicurious, Bon Appetit, Eating Well and Vegetarian Times.

I have to say, one of my most favorite cookbook collections is Donna Hay. Her magazine is now available in the states in some book stores. I lived in New Zealand for a few years and got really familiar with her recipes (being an Aussie, she’s pretty popular over there).

    Now I’m craving pasta! ;-)

I’m so not a foodie or a fab cook by any stretch of the imagination. But for quick, easy and tasty recipes I hit up Real Simple magazine/website. I’m just mainstream like that :o ) The beef brisket picture is making me hungry :o )

I started cooking out of necessity because I was a “latch-key kid” in the 80s and 90s growing up. Also, I quickly realized my mom’s cooking was sub-par, bless her, once Food Network came around. I used to watch FN obsessively, but now, I actually get most of my inspiration from magazines. Yes, real paper magazines. I can’t help it. It’s one random splurge I have. I subscribe to Food & Wine, bon appetit, MS Living, and Self. There are incredible healthy recipes in Self, and I’d never thought of that before!
