Eco-Friendly Green Outdoor Grilling Choices
I have lived in New York for most of my adult life. Before that, I lived in Chicago – which again, gave me an urban/city feel. One thing you miss out on when you live in a city is grilled food and the act of BBQ. Did you know that due to fire codes it’s actually illegal to have a grill on your balcony (if you’re lucky enough to have one!) in NYC? Needless to say, the very first purchase we made as homeowners was an outdoor grill.
The reason being is two fold: 1) We’re just so excited to eat and participate in the act of grilling 2) The kitchen is being torn out so that the poured concrete can be placed throughout the entirety of the main floor – we intend to cook eggs/oatmeal in the morning and dinner at night on the grill every day between now and the end of Summer when the new kitchen will be installed.
I have long been interested in making the most holistic choices I can in regards to my physical, emotional, spiritual, social well being. I’d like to avoid imbalance in my life and want to make the very best choices that I can with the knowledge I have or can educate myself on. These decisions I make have an environmental impact – I realize that by myself it may be a small impact, but the impact exists nonetheless.
If there are enough people making the best choices with the knowledge that they have – we can make a difference overall. There is a push on Twitter by Leslie Carothers who is advocating Slow Home awareness. She and many others are bringing attention to the homespun, locavore feeling of the Slow Food Movement to furniture and the choices we make in decorating our homes. (Eco-friendly paint, flooring, sustainable furnishings, etc.)
While I was on the hunt for a grill that was appropriate for us, I read a few articles about being green when grilling and making an eco-friendly choice of outdoor grills. If you’re in the market for a grill or thinking about purchasing a new grill, I suggest that you check out Growing a Green Family and Kashi’s eco-friendly grilling guide. They may just inform you in a way that will determine how you grill this Summer!

I love grilling/bbq-ing all year round! We’re lucky to have a natural gaz outlet on the outside of our home where we hook up our grill to it. No more running out of gaz! It’s easy access and it gives food amazing flavour. I love your grilled cheese with bacon and arugula. Not exactly heart-healthy but seriously grown-up yummy! I must try it. Good luck with all your renovations! I’m excited to see the dramatic ‘befores’ and ‘afters’. btw: who’s the cute doggie in the window?

Hi Will.
As always, if the photo isn’t mine – I have linked the image to the site it’s from. You’ll see at the bottom it says “grilling images” and then the names of them. They’ll take you to the spots on flickr where I found them.
As for the barn image, it’s mine – not shot so beautifully!
Thanks for chiming in Will.

Chantale, Thanks for the comment today. The dog belongs to the previous owners. It was a shot I took when we were looking at houses, before the place belonged to us — take note, no leaves on the trees!
Now I am surrounded by lush greenery – the property looks completely different!
