glossy white floors {White -or- Wrong?}

As you may know, we decided to go forward with poured concrete on the main floor of The Country House. I was ready to go forward with light to medium-grey floors – until last week. As you recall, I wrote this post about Vicente Wolf over at Plush Palate. Glossy white floors in almost every image. Then I saw this post on Design Blahg. Go on, check them out – those gorgeous white floors are totally worth a peek - I’ll be here when you return! *winkwink*Obviously, I am not the first person to write a blog post about glossy white floors. Most of the images are from posts that were written all about white floors. Please stop these links if you want more white flooring inspiration! YES gorgeous!!! white glossy floors look so much like a Scandinavian style and I think you can never go wrong with them! great great choice! xoxo

The Mr. and I are always shoe-free, so I am not too worried… not to mention, we did dark floors in the last place, and they were the WORST for showing every speck of dust. ;)

    Thanks for chiming in Heather!

Maybe that is why I am attracted to it? My mother’s side of the family is Scandinavian!

    Thanks for chiming in Ludmila!

Love love love the white! I love it in all forms, but it’s awesome with the right colored walls or accessories. That’s the beauty of it. It’s a beautiful base for playing with color in your furniture and accessories.

You are “white”. Those high polished white floors are gorgeous! Cant wait to see the finished product. (I dont care as much for the rustic white plank floors, though)

  7. karen on 07 Jul 2010 at 11:13 am

i love it!! i have always wanted to do a Caribbean home with white floors, it just effuses cool no? and the poured concrete in gloss is just fabulous Amy!

  8. ABCDDesigns on 07 Jul 2010 at 11:15 am

I agree – the house (until about two weeks ago!) had dark blue/grey floors. The white pops! I am so super excited for the finished product.

  9. ABCDDesigns on 07 Jul 2010 at 11:16 am

Diane, I agree with you – I think that since the house is a mix between Shaker Laundry House and Modern Loft that the slick white cement floors will help me keep that modern feel we’re trying not to lose in the renovation.

    Thanks for chiming in!

Kristen, I *so* totally agree with you. I am a big fan of a neutral base palette that allow you to play with color/art and accessories – It’s totally the way to go in my book. :) Glad you agree!

Ooh, can’t wait to see this come together! Several months ago at my parents’ house I found an old copy of Country Living that had this GORGEOUS bedroom in it with glossy white floors that were striped with lavender. I’ve been thinking about them ever since!

  14. Caitlin @ Sacramento Street on 07 Jul 2010 at 2:28 pm

Our old portland house had white painted floors. I absolutely LOVED them and would do it again in a heart beat.

LOVE love love all the pictures of these floors! In fact, just inspired me for a project I am working on…for an outdoor deck. Can’t wait to see your finished floors – hope you’ll feature! :)

  16. ABCDDesigns on 07 Jul 2010 at 2:44 pm

Maggie, I love lavender with white – especially when grey or brown is brought in to “handsome it up” a bit. Oh, now you’ve got me thinking about the spare bedroom… I all but settled on creamy-yellow!
    ;)

Caitlin – I just took a peek at the white floors… ohlalala! It brightens up the house like crazy-sauce. I am sooooo excited!

Jill – glad I could inspire! Be sure to post twitpics once the job is complete.

Pretty. White floors lend so much light to a space, then you can really play with colors, texture etc.

  18. Irene Turner on 07 Jul 2010 at 3:10 pm

YES…gorgeous! I love the shiny white. I’ve been wanting to do a white venetian stucco…I think that the shiny white will also reflect the lighting and colors around it…with a lot of windows and fabulous sunsets…beautiful too. Sigh…sorry, I’m having a creative run on moment!

  19. ABCDDesigns on 07 Jul 2010 at 3:13 pm

Sounds great Irene – go on, go on! :D

  20. ABCDDesigns on 07 Jul 2010 at 3:14 pm

Agreed! It will allow us to embrace dark paint a little too, which I like! Thanks for commenting Belly!

Glossy White concrete floors….daring and brilliant! I installed dark hardwood last summer. I love it because it’s not carpet and hate it because it shows every freakin’ speck of dust. Boo to dust. Can’t wait to see the progress!

  25. joshsellsny on 07 Jul 2010 at 10:19 pm

hey there! whoa! you guys finally got a house? why am i the last to know?! congrats! white concrete floors may have neg impact on resale however cool. would go w painted wood if not too late. also, might be cold in winter time. if concrete, would be awesome to put radiant heat in wo too much difficulty. we put it in the new parts of our house and miss it in the old parts with the clanking radiators.

  26. ABCDDesigns on 07 Jul 2010 at 10:54 pm

@marilyn oh dear! I feel your pain. We did jacobean stain in our last apartment and on day 1 I wanted to cry! The dust bunnies and scratches were endless!

@nycgirl0501 thanks for showing some NYC love. :)

@josh I sent you an email, but the long and short of it – we did buy a house -!- Hooray!! We have radiant flooring existing in the cement slab of the house, and concrete seemed the most reasonable/chic option available to us. I love the fact that it’s eco-friendly, it looks great and it is practically indestructible!

We’ll totally have you up to take a peek soon – it’s a real cutie pie!

Thanks to everyone who commented today.

Sorry I’m a bit late coming in on this one, Amy, didn’t get much Mac access yesterday!

I’m all for white floors, esp. when they are floorboards. For me, the look is best when the walls arn’t all over white as well – if they are a different shade or papered, then it helps to make the floor POP.

love glossy white floor in the right setting… beach house, studio apartment or cottage. love your blog. darling.

  29. Lauren on 08 Jul 2010 at 11:55 pm

White floors are totally my obsession ever since I saw them is this amazing NYC loft with black ceilings and moldings. HAWT!

  30. ABCDDesigns on 09 Jul 2010 at 8:14 am

    Oh Lauren —
You KNOW I wanted black trim = the Mr. is *SO* not feeling it. :( He says it looks like racing stripes on the walls. Oh Boo! Sometimes I don’t win when it comes to decorating for us…

And yeah, how about that hair?! I still have not had the nerve to break it to my mom… she doesn’t like me as a brunette. Wah!

Thanks for chiming in on ABCD. Hopefully we’ll get to see you two next weekend?

I love white floors – an amazing backdrop for colourful furniture and accessories. I design patchwork chairs in vibrant colours and patterns, white floors are my perfect setting for taking photos of my pieces. I’m a big fan of white floors!

I also want glossy white poured concrete floor but can’t find anyone who does them in Long Island. Any recommendations for contractors?

  34. ABCD on 24 Jan 2011 at 3:47 pm

    Trish!

It was hard to find someone. I found my guy here: http://www.concretenetwork.com/concrete/interiorfloors/

    Good luck! :D

What kind of paint did you use on the concrete? I was going to suggest epoxy paint meant for garage floors. Seriously tough stuff but not the cheapest – house paint will peel right off concrete – need to do an acid wash on it first so the paint sticks.

  36. ABCDragoo on 18 Nov 2011 at 4:54 am

    Hi Matt.
We used concrete with pigment in it. They then covered the floor with clear epoxy.
