Glossy White Floors + Bedroom Paint Debate {update}
*Kindly excuse the late post today. Tradesmen start their days so darn early! Their meeting times coincide perfectly with my morning espresso and blog post writing time!*
This past Sunday evening, (after the final coat of wax was put on our new glossy white floors) I drove to the City. I wanted to give the floor a full day or two to completely harden before we started walking all over it again. I spent Sunday and Monday night in NYC – omgosh, it was so pleasant to sleep in a real bed again! – and then I drove back out on Tuesday morning to schedule more renovation projects.
The last two days have been chalk full of visits from electricians and sheetrock guys, finish carpenters …and… later today, I have an appointment with the painter. Ugh. Did I mention that this master bedroom is killing me?
I am still leaning towards charcoal, even though I was nearly sure the bedroom wall texture calls for light. Oh brother! Like I said, I have all but come full circle and am leaning towards the charcoal again. What are your thoughts?

Whoa! Glad I saw the tweet. The floors are absolutely amazing, unexpected but not out to shock. Glamor utility is the way to go!
It’s hard for me to imagine a room once painted, and even harder that I cannot see the layout or natural lighting. It seems to me that you’ve opted for cheery and country in the guest bed, so why not branch out. Charcoal couldn’t be further from it, but that’s they joy, right? It’s like you’ll have different galleries to visit when you stroll through your house each morning! Finally, the texture of the plaster may prove to be helpful on a sunny day by reflecting light and brightening the room up. So there, not every day will you be in a dark, dark room!
I’d say go for the opposite, knowing that you’re attracted to a complex palette. It’s bound not to be too disjointed due to the sheer presence of those handsome, oiled wood floors!

Those floors are amazing. I can’t believe how shiny and reflective they are. Even though they look grey, I can tell it’s going to be beautiful.

I love dark for bedrooms but I do think the texture calls for light. I like the second from the left very much (is it a gray with blue undertone?) and I think the outcome depends on how you decorate/furnish the room. It’s a color that *can* be “baby nursery”, but it doesn’t *have to* be that. Speaking of tradesmen, I’m waiting right now for them to install our kitchen door (after 3 weeks in the apartment…) so yeah, I get your exhaustion.

Whoa! The new floors are stunning! I really like the charcoal, but if you’re thinking something light might be better, I like the gray over #1 in the first picture or the second from the left in the bottom picture. If it’s any consolation… you can always paint over it, so go for whichever you like best! (Although, I guess it would be easier to paint dark colors over light colors…).

Looking good! Hard to capture the floor with the light, that’s tricky!

You guys, it’s nuts.. people come to the door and say “is it okay to step on it? is the floor wet?” LOL!
I love it though. It reflects shadows of tree tops in it and makes the house seem HUGE and open=a happy accident.
As for the walls: Jen in the Country, that is Coventry grey you like …and I like it too… but I am using stonington grey in the bathroom, and it looks *so* similar I might as well paint them the same colors, you know?
Belly/ChevdaK, I need to re-check, are you in the City? Renos there are far more difficult than they are here in the country. I wish you well on your kitchen reno, gosh… exhaust-i-cating!
Thanks Susan, both Jens, Will, Lydia, and ChevdaK for chiming in today. I always love to hear your thoughts.

Amy, I’m in *a* city… Tel Aviv, Israel, to be exact
Lucky for me, we’re not doing a reno. We built the apt. from scratch (the building is brand new, still in the gift wrap..) and now we’re putting the final touches (unnecessary things, like interior doors, for example…) and then the fun part begins, with accessories and art etc.
The floor sounds awesome! I love glossy floors (or walls, oh I dream of a navy, glossy cocoon), so white + glossy= sounds like perfection!

As to the bedroom….are you cave dwellers. or light seekers? The charcoal is beautiful, but if you’re light seekers, you’ll always be walking around with a squint trying to access more light. Certainly, you can lighten up the space using white trim and furnishings. My daughter was a cave dweller, and she loved being in a dark room. I, on the other hand, throw open the windows and turn on all the lights…dark rooms depress me. Think about where you feel the most comfortable….what rooms make you feel more at peace. It’s not so much about the hue, it’s about lights and darks. Go forth and contemplate some more!

I agree with Jen… I like the lighter gray above #1 if you are going with a lighter colour! If you are sticking with dark, then charcoal still has my vote! And I love love love the floors!

Glossy white floors? I whole heartedly approve! I’d love to try them myself (blogged about glossy black a few weeks ago) but I’m afraid our dogs would tear them to shreds. Let us know how yours fair?

Erin,
The white is great. The darker the floor, the more it will show – of everything! Our floor is modeled a few shades of white, so it kind of “hides” imperfections!
If you’re going for poured concrete- it is virtually indestructible. Not kidding!
Paint on wood on the other hand… I dunno.
Thanks for chiming in!

@Sally – I think we’re both! Our last place was so light and bright!! But both of us wanted a dark place to sleep — the rest of the house will have to be happy and bright.

Oh man, I know everyone else has already said it but I have to say it again, that floor is crazy stunning. I love it! Wonderful choice, can’t wait to see the rest of the room

Amy, do what scares you the most!!! It will either be genius and brilliant or you’ll go down in flames but in the end it is only paint and you can re-do it until it’s exactly what you want. No glory ever comes from doing what is safe … especially in design! Good luck!!!
