My favorite eco idea is using adorable screen printed totes to carry items from grocery or any shopping. My favorite tote is one purchased at Anthropologie that has a map of the various dog parks in Chicago.

This book looks divine Amy! I try to be eco-friendly by repurposing items and using as much vintage as possible

Thanks for the chance Amy! From the pictures you’ve shown here, I can tell they are great! I’d love to win! I love the napkin with the fruit with the wire wrapped around it—so cool!

I love the feel of this book! Gorgeous. My favorite eco chic tip is to reuse + repurpose. Using antiques in your designs, restoring an old home, repurposing gorgeously packaged things – all give a feeling of nostalgia + character, while helping to stay eco-friendly.

Congratulations on your THIRD blog-i-versary! I’ve loved seeing the evolution of it over the past two years. As I’ve been renovating my new studio space, your stories have been my inspiration! Can’t wait for what you have in store for the future, too!

I love a good design book especially about repurposing. So many things are overlooked due to a bad stain or paint job. A lot of pieces just need a little love and they are beautiful. Great giveaway!

I would love this book! I just got a book for my birthday called The Find, which has awesome tips as well. I love finding antiques and hidden treasures at thrift shops. I also like to paint old furniture to give it a cheap face lift!

I love using my mom’s older silver teapots as vases for flowers….why hide a beautiful antique silver tea set behind glass doors….it still boggles my mother’s mind.
Happy Anniversary for your blog!!

We’ve gradually replaced all of our plastic storage containers with lovelier, eco-friendlier options. Small kitchen containers were replaced by jam jarss. Household storage bins were replace by lovely, sturdy, boxes that gifts came in, or woven baskets picked up at the second-hand store. We made cotton bags for bulk items and produce at the grocery store. Now we not only have a lovelier home, but we aren’t exposing ourselves to any more BPA or pthalates.

My favorite eco chic tip for our home is that we just recently got rid of all of our powered gardening equipment and purchased a vintage push mower, push edger and hand trimmers and are now doing our yard work together without any pollution, noise pollution or leaving any carbon footprint. We have more time to spend together and we realized how little effort and time it takes and is great excercise. Just found your blog and love it.

awesome give-away! thanks so much!
we at casa de’ make a house a home have a strict rule of – build it yourself! we never buy what we can make ourselves. we will take old and renew and build from scratch. it is very eco chic because this helps reduce your footprint in a handful of ways. from saving energy, to wasting gas in deliveries, and emissions at manufacturing plants, to saving the “waste” for new projects. we are not professionals by any means, but we have figured out how to make solid pieces ourselves – it saves us money and helps the future of our planet.

Oh how I love this book! My favorite way to be EcoChic is to use nature in my designs. My favorite designs in my home are using things I found. Driftwood + Rocks. I have driftwood displayed in my home from various beaches that i shipped home, and hung on my walls like art sculptures, and found rocks adorn my shelves, plants and credenzas as little natural, relaxing sculptures. I find the simplest pleasures in displaying my eco, natural treasures in my home + each has a wonderful memory of how I found them.

Congrats on your anniversary Amy! My favorite eco-chic tip is to invest in quality pieces that you can re-use & re-cover for years to come. Cut the crap & avoid case goods made of particle board & items that will quickly fall apart & end up in a land fill. Don’t purchase “on the cheap” just to fill up your home quickly. Do your research & look for manufacturers that use sustainable products & environmentally friendly practices.

Hello! Congratulations on your third anniversary and thank you for this lovely gift to us. Very cool of you and Ms. Howard! The book looks amazing. Well, my favorite eco tip is to transform your old light fixtures into new ones by painting them with a metal primer, following up with your choice of Modern Masters metallic paints and then aging them with Golden’s Burnt or Raw Umber glaze. All water-based products, of course. The light fixture is given new life with no need to throw it away!

Another fun giveaway Amy! One of mine and my husband’s favorite hobby is to stroll through streets and alleys for discarded finds. We furnished our entire patio: marble bench, 2 book cases, a giant wooden table and 2 chairs. They were all left as is. We have also stripped and repainted a wooden entry table and a headboard that we turned into a desk/bookcase. Love love love to recycle what we can. And there are some great finds out there!

Amy – Happy 3rd Blogiversary – what an accomplishment! I will get mine up and running soon and you will be the first to know!
I love to repurpose items that were headed for the trash. It’s a huge sense of accomplishment to give something a new life!

Looks like a great book!! I have tried to stop using paper towels and use cloth towels whenever possible. The towels look cute and can be rewashed and reused many times over.

I grew up on a farm so we were living the new ‘eco trend’ way of life years ahead of it’s time. My latest projects are 1.decor – I bought a used bench and recovered it. Hubby thought I bought it new!
2. Halloween project – collected acorns, cooked them in the oven to kill nasty bugs waiting to eat their way out, took tops off and painted them orange, painted fun black faces and stem and now have a family of mini jack-o-lanterns. Next -paint a found branch black and hang the family in it. If there is time I plan to give some hats, etc.

A few years ago I invested in some organic cotton bags to use while shopping. I keep some in the car and some in the kitchen and whenever I need a bag, I have one (bonus: it won’t break like paper or plastic). I’ve also completely changed how I think about stuff — most of what I have now is used and was found on Craigslist. It’s been fantastic to save beautiful pieces, as well as money. I’d love to have this book so I could learn to do even more.

Go to garage sales for some items – you are reusing something that may have otherwise ended up in the dump and occasionally you will find a valuable piece!
For items that are already in my home, I try to think of different ways to use things.

For years I’ve been a fan of the yard sale, flea market, and thrift store. Really big on the reuse, I am now an ardent participant in freecycle. The beauty of circulating goods until they find a home, whether it is a piece of furniture, fruit from a tree, technology, clothing, etc., is a boost for community as well as the ecology.

My eco-chic tip is one I picked up from my mother. I haven’t bought wrapping paper or tags since the 80′s instead I preserve and reuse ribbons, bows, tissue paper, shopping bags, twine, old cards get cut up into name tags, scrap fabric gets sewn up into gift bags that can be used again and again. The packages are also lovely, they just require a little bit of ingenuity and a drawer filled with salvaged paper.

For our housewarming gift, my father made beautiful picture frames and a gorgeous framed mirror made out of reclaimed wood. The wood comes from old wood crates used for shipping. When they start to crack and get a little weak and can’t hold so much weight anymore, they get stacked around dumpsters. But break them apart, sand them down and use a little paint on them and you have beautiful wood to use!

Congrads on your anniversary. I have enjoyed your blog so much.We re-use and re-purpose as much as possible.
My favorite, most recent Eco Tip: a Sazerac Rye Whiskey bottle (you’ve got to see one to understand just how beautiful it is) that I am using as a vase in my bathroom with an orange gerber daisy. It makes me smile every time I see it!

I write a green living column and have always re-purposed without really realizing it. I use large yogurt containers as a water container to water my plants or to hold pens and pencils. I also use the old tofu containers as a sponge holder in my kitchen.

Let’s see… I always re-use bags, as well as take my own “green” bags to the grocery store. We receive hand me down clothes for DD that we pass on to her cousin and then they are passed on again to a friend. Love that!
And if we no longer need a piece of furniture we shift it to my in-laws or someone else in the family. Soon we will be swapping dining tables with my parents – we need a big one for holiday get-togethers and they want to downsize in retirement to our smaller one.
Hope you are enjoying your third blogiversary week, Amy!
Ellie on 11 Oct 2010 at 11:41 pm
Congratulations!
My tip for eco-chic living is to keep lots of colorful throw blankets and afgans around the house, especially in the areas where people tend to lounge (living room, etc). Then when it gets chilly, you can easily wrap up in one of your cozy blankets instead of turning up the heat. Also, the blankets can add wonderful textures and colors to your decor. If you knit or crochet, it’s a nice way to show off your work! The only thing that’s a bit challenging is getting everyone to fold up the blankets neatly when they’re not using them!
